Springs are a major part of your garage door, unlike other components, if a spring breaks you need to replace it to keep your garage door functioning and operating properly.
What to Know about Extension Springs
When one spring breaks, the door will suddenly feel very heavy when you try to open it by hand, and an automatic garage door opener may no longer be able to lift the door at all. Garage door springs cannot be repaired. Maintenance involves the full replacement of both springs at the same time
No. If your garage door was originally set up with only one torsion spring, then you are perfectly fine with having only one spring put back on the door. If your garage door has two springs pulling the door up, then definitely have both replaced.
By far the biggest reason for garage door spring failure is simple wear and tear. Most springs are engineered and rated for about 10,000 cycles – one cycle being the garage door going up and coming back down to close
It will just drop the door in place with a very sudden motion. Your garage door should have a red emergency rope hanging from the opening mechanism. If you pull on this and the door fails to open, your spring is most likely broken. If this happens, you might have only one spring broken in a two-spring system
These springs are essential for opening and closing your garage smoothly, especially if you have two. This means that you shouldn't use your garage door opener without any springs since residential openers don't typically have much horsepower
If your garage door's torsion spring is broken you will likely notice the following: Usually the automatic garage door opener will not open the door. When you disconnect the opener and raise the door manually, the door won't stay in the up position. You will see the split in the spring when viewing it.
A typical drum has a 4" diameter which means that each full wind (4 quarter turns) will give about 12.5 inches of lift height. Usually about 1 extra wind is added so the cable stays in tension. You should end up using about 7.5 to 8 turns for a 7' door and about 1 additional turn for an 8' door.
Look at the end of the spring to determine the wind direction. ...
Measure the length, in inches, of ten or twenty coil of the spring that needs to be replaced. .
For torsion springs, measure the inside diameter to the 1/16” of an inch.
Measure the overall length of the spring to the nearest quarter inch.
Torsion springs tend to be stronger and more durable than extension springs. And though they are more expensive, they last longer, between 15,000 and 20,000 cycles as opposed to 10,000 cycles with extension springs. They also offer greater balance and show more control when moving, not jerking as the door moves
